Shining the Light on our Promotion Black Box

“A person without dreams is no different to an anchovy”, famous Hong Kong philosopher, Stephen Shing-Chi Chow … at HKBN, we dream separately but come together to execute our dream into reality.

In many traditional companies, the annual job promotion process is a secret black box, whereby a list of names for promotions are simply announced. At HKBN, we do promotion reviews two times a year. We differ in that we offer maximum transparency in the process, so as to showcase why we’ve passed and failed promotion applications, and by doing so, we aim to inspire a higher standard for promotions every sequent period.

At HKBN, the reporting supervisor only nominates the candidate for promotion into our management tier, however the actual promotion is decided upon by an independent group of executives. Our process is designed to improve consistency across different departments and minimise the subjective influence of the reporting supervisor. The nominating supervisor should be certain that his/her promotion nominee meets our company-wide leadership standards, rather than merely his/her personal preferences.

Furthermore, for the top ~400 managers and above Talents in our company, year-end performance reviews and full salary packages are appraised simultaneously by our Management Committee of top 8 executives together with our Talent Engagement team, to ensure fairness across departments. This way, we can compare salary packages across different departments such as Finance, Sales, IT, Network, etc., to ensure fairness and relative value to the company. We believe few companies operate at this level of transparency.
