Building Hong Kong Through COURAGE: HKBN Hosts Webinar with Mother’s Choice Leaders
On 22 July, we hosted a stimulating webinar discussion with Alia Eyres and Ranjan Marwah, the CEO and the Co-Founder respectively of Mother’s Choice – a local charity that works with single mothers on crisis pregnancies across Hong Kong. Ranjan Marwah – along with his fellow Co-Founders – was inspired by news reports citing growing numbers of teenage girls travelling to the Mainland for late-term abortions. During a time when local support systems were insufficient, Mother’s Choice was established in 1987 to ensure that every child in Hong Kong could be born into a loving family.
Our webinar was a two-way discussion filled with insights and great advice. Everyone who attended – including many of our young Summer Associates and Summer Innovators – learned about the gripping journey behind Mother’s Choice, as experienced over the years by Ranjan and Alia. Below are some key takeaways:
From Ranjan
●
“Reality is for people who lack imagination.”
●
“My secret to success? Working with other people. Nothing more.”
●
“Remain curious, and always think about helping others! You will gain a lot more.”
From Alia
●
“Always ask yourself, what can I do about solving a problem?”
●
“There is something each and every one of us can do to make the world better.”
●
“It takes COURAGE to be a true entrepreneur. Relationships are super important.”

Although Mother’s Choice is largely successful today (having supported more than 53,000 girls through crisis pregnancies), the charity began from humble beginnings. Ranjan Marwah first migrated to Hong Kong from India in 1971 – in search for a better life for him and his family. Eventually, through the creation of numerous successful businesses, including Mother’s Choice, Ranjan succeeded! Meanwhile, Alia (the eldest of Ranjan’s 7 children), grew up in Hong Kong, spending her early childhood years volunteering at Mother’s Choice. After establishing her career as a prominent corporate lawyer in both Hong Kong and New York – with a JD from Georgetown University – Alia decided to switch gears and take up the Chief Executive position at Mother's Choice in 2012.

“I will share what I have with others. These things might not be tangible; it can be the time you spend to accompany a frustrated friend, or the knowledge you share with poor children. Sometimes a cup of hot coffee can make someone’s day!"
- Tiffany Chau, Summer Associate – Finance, Enterprise Solutions

"I used to have small targets because I was constrained by the 'reality' cage, when really, I was constraining myself. From now on, I will DREAM and aim higher.”
