John Wood with 104 HKBN managers at our Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam annual experiential management offsite… We were extremely pleased to have raised US$67,000 from HKBN managers, sufficient funding to build a school and provide 1-year of learning for 107 girls.

At our most recent annual experiential management trip held in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam for 104 HKBN leaders, we had the honour of John Wood sharing a preview of his new book with us Purpose, Incorporated: Cause and Capitalism in the 21st Century. As the author of Leaving Microsoft to Change the World, John has done exactly as the title states, leaving Microsoft in 2000 at age 35 to co-found Room to Read. Today, 17 years later, Room to Read has ascended to become a disruptive global non-profit organisation that has deployed around 19,000 literary programme partner schools, impacting around 11 million students.
John Wood, Co-founder of Room to Read said, “I was thrilled to preview my new book to over 100 of HKBN’s passionate and talented executive team. HKBN is one of the companies I feature in the book as an example of how cause and capitalism can be united, and how we can move away from a world where people think that purpose is antithetical to profits. I’m also honored that HKBN is taking pre-orders for the book, and I’d welcome you to be an early reader.”
NiQ Lai, our COO and Co-Owner said, “John’s talk made us realise that we had lucked out in the lottery of life to be born in the right place and at the right time. For us in our 40-50s, the far majority of our parents were either illiterate or lowly educated due to circumstance, yet today, we can afford university educations for our children. This is a massive transformation in just 3 generations, so it is now really up to us to share our luck forward.”
John Wood is currently booking speaking engagements tied to the launch of his new book. For inquiries, please mail him at john.wood@roomtoread.org.
