This July, our inaugural ‘The Hope Makers’ venture to nurture the spirit of innovation in local tertiary students came to a conclusion. From start to finish, this 6-month collaboration between HKBN, our independent HKBN Talent CSI Fund and MakerBay (a multidisciplinary platform providing creative workspace, tools and expertise for local communities) saw us work with 25 students, pairing them in 6 competitive teams – aided by HKBN Talent volunteers – under a noble objective to problem solve for waste reduction.
With plenty to sink their teeth into – including a 2-day knowledge boot-camp, hands-on prototyping and even an eye-opening study trip to Japan – our participants engineered some nifty concepts that ranged from a fish tank tasked to cut bathwater usage, a smart-autonomous recycling bin to a package-free shampoo vending machine. Besides putting their technical resourcefulness to the test, our Hopemakers had to pitch their ideas and face serious scrutiny from prospective investors – just like they would in the business world!

“I used to believe that environmentally friendly projects don’t really have much relevance in the world of business. After taking part in Hope Makers, I have learned how both are actually quite compatible.”
Benny Cheung, Hope Makers participant
University of Hong Kong, Computer Science/Electrical Engineering
“Although the world seems headed towards a direction of resource depletion, there are still lots of people working to push the planet on the right track. This means we still have hope for the planet and our next generation.”
Lok G Cheng, Hope Makers participant
University of Hong Kong, Computer Science & General Business Management
