What a Difference 6 Years of Amazing Progress Can Make

In 2011, 94 HKBNers visited Cambodian Children’s Fund (CCF) as part of our annual management experiential trip. Since that time, both CCF and HKBN have grown immensely – so much so that through a recent personal visit to Phnom Penh for my son JaQ and I, it was fascinating to compare notes on how far both parties have come. This time, compared to my previous visits, the experience was far more impactful. With the passage of time, I could observe how the CCF kids have grown up over the past six years and see with my own eyes how CCF breaks the poverty cycle for kids and their families.

Founded by Scott Neeson in 2004, CCF is an incredible charity which works with some of the most impoverished communities from around the former Steung Meanchey garbage dump in Phnom Penh, providing them a hand-up to permanently break the poverty cycle rather than a handout for temporary relief. Through CCF’s award-winning programmes, today there are almost 2,000 students working towards a better future for themselves and their families.

CCF is managed as well or better than any commercial company I have benchmarked throughout my career. Although CCF’s main mission is to empower Cambodia’s youth through education, the organisation realises that in order for students to prioritise their studies and break the poverty cycle, they and their families must be assured financial, medical, and physical security. CCF’s implemented solutions range from a free medical clinic, granny sponsorship/support to student-run leadership development events and by incentivising school attendance via free rice for the family. My key corporate take-away for HKBN, is that to be a sustainable business like CCF, we must address the root cause of an issue, rather than just fix the symptoms.
