A Unique IPO Gift Helps Inspire Young Minds

“To celebrate the completion of our IPO in March 2015, UBS awarded us with a very unique gift of 10 UBS investment banker days to do as we see fit for Corporate Social Investment. Of all the various IPO souvenirs we received, this gift from UBS was by far the dearest to our hearts,” said NiQ Lai, Head of Talent Engagement, CFO and Co-Owner of HKBN.

We happily matched UBS’s gift with our own HKBN executive days and worked with a local NGO to create, as a start, an inspirational workshop for 20 local secondary school students to visit the UBS Hong Kong headquarters on the 52nd floor, IFC, Central, for a productive day exploring problem-solving skills in a business environment.

Reinforcing the bonds of our IPO partnership, eight executives from UBS and HKBN worked together to serve the community by inspiring youths.

Little changes can go a long way, but they all begin with a mind inspired. Designed to help teenagers unleash their potential, our joint workshop gave each participant the chance to engage and flourish in a series of challenges that highlight what life is like inside a high-octane work environment. Aided by eight volunteers from HKBN and UBS, our students emerged from the day with many fresh new perspectives to see their future under a different light.

"Our team truly appreciated this opportunity. The kids are smart and engaged, and by working together we were able to introduce them to new strategies they can use well beyond their school years. I can't think of a better way for UBS to share its knowledge with the community."
– Sam Kendall, Group Managing Director, ECM & Corporate Client Solutions at UBS
Everyone involved had a great time and the students took away some important learning insights:
“I have learnt that before arriving at a decision, I should make comprehensive considerations and think about the long-term impact.”
– Liao Hon Lam, age 16
“I have learnt the importance of communications, plus how to effectively collaborate and reach a consensus with others.”
– Ng Nga Ki, age 16
“I learned that in order to gain respect from others, what’s crucial is having the right attitude at work.”
– Ho Yan Yan, age 16
