The Art of Effective Leadership – Just Do Nothing!

  Dear Friends of HKBN

The Art of Effective Leadership via "Doing Nothing"

Even as research shows that trusting others more can improve performance, few leaders, sadly, do it enough. At HKBN, we've always strived to create a culture of independence and trust. Like the self-sustaining Ecosphere pictured above, we believe with the right amount of groundwork and provision for trust, companies can be transformed into thriving businesses with minimal input from the top.

The reason is simple: people perform better when they stop worrying about being watched over every move. This outside the box thinking was amongst many radical lessons taken from Kellogg School of Management award winning Professor, J. Keith Murnighan. Two years ago, we invited Prof. Murnighan to lead a team of HKBN managers for a highly stimulating workshop. Offering up a variety of fascinating ideas and thought exercises, the profound workshop steered us to rethink what's possible when the Professor's acclaimed "Do Nothing" principles on leadership are applied.

Needless to say our managers came away extremely impressed, so much so we jumped at the opportunity to organise two additional one-day MBA workshops with Prof. Murnighan. This time, however – with our intent to inspire more far-reaching – participation was extended to include top-level executives from our business partners.

In total, 122 participants attended both full-day workshops, comprising 47 HKBN Talents and an assemblage of 75 business leaders from 69 leading companies including the Airport Authority, New World Development, Deutsche Bank, Ritz Carlton and more. Distilling the essentials behind Prof. Murnighan's latest course material, the workshops delivered by counter-intuitively asking leaders to "ignore performance goals" or even "de-emphasise profits", changing each participant's understanding about how they too can "Do Nothing" and still achieve KickAss results beyond the limitations of the "Do Everything" boss.

Finding no shortage in buoyant responses, our hopes are high that these lessons will make an impact! To learn more about J. Keith Murnighan and his ideas on "Do Nothing", please visit:

"The whole day was very enlightening. All three exercises were quite thought provoking. Professor Keith Murnighan is a very good speaker who can relate theory to practical application. There are a lot of good concepts to take home to make us a better leader in our company."

"As a leader, I've learned we should push talents to reach their maximum potential. A key takeaway is to trust and empower your teammates when leading a team… to facilitate and allow the team to shine and grow. Instead of nonstop guidance every step of the way, leaders should convey the direction clearly and coach others to think out of the box when finding solutions."
