Over 130 HKBNers Run as One at Hong Kong Marathon 2016

We’ve done it, again! For the ninth consecutive year, braving conditions of rain and cold, over 130 HKBNers persevered to finish their sprint (full, half and 10 km) of the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon 2016.

This year, rather than tackling the ‘big race’ the usual way, we figured why not try an approach that’s less obsessed about solo missions and more about encouraging shared social collaboration.

With our marathon journeys themed around the idea of ‘Connections’, we induced our runners to form small teams and complete their runs in a cooperative manner. Likewise, we started a “Running Mentorship” programme in October and brought together 12 HKBNers with over 30 local youths from our community (with help from Hong Kong Playground Association). By providing marathon training as a pretext, our Running Mentors served to steer their paths through precious life lessons, bonding and good natured guidance.

“I am extremely grateful to our Running Mentors. They sacrificed their own free time, taking one evening every week to help us through a variety of training and exercises.”

“As a Running Mentor, I wanted to be a role model for our Mentees. This meant I had to put in greater effort towards training. In the end, I achieved a better run over my previous year.”
